CHEF'S DELIGHT: MISO SALMON

I absolutely adore the Miso Salmon on a delightful bed of sushi rice, sprinkled with flavorful dashi flakes! This dish, expertly crafted by my talented husband, features a delectable sauce made with miso, mirin, sake, and sugar. It's truly one of my all-time favorite meals!

CREATE AND EVOLVE

REPURPOSING WHITE TABLE NAPKINS: AN EXPERIMENT IN NATURAL KITCHEN DYES.

After years of hosting dinner parties, my white table napkins ended up looking all discolored and stained. I couldn't bear to just toss them out, so I thought, why not try something different? That's when I got the idea to play around with natural dyes.

It all started when I was juicing beets, carrots, oranges, and apples. Usually, I'd bake something with the leftover pulp or chuck it in the compost. But this time, I thought, hey, why not use it for dyeing fabric? The inspiration struck after I picked up a book called "Natural Kitchen Dyes" during a library date with my husband. I'd been wanting to try fabric dyeing for ages, especially since I had a bottle of expired turmeric and a pack of beet powder lying around that I didn't want to waste.

So, I got the dyeing process going by simmering the juice pulp for an hour and then straining the liquid once it had cooled down. But oops, I forgot to add the turmeric powder! No biggie, I threw it in and let the liquid sit uncovered in the pot for 6 days. After that, I added the table napkins (pre-soaked in water) to the pot with the simmering dye solution. An hour later, I let it cool down and left it uncovered for another 6 days. Before taking out the napkins to dry, my husband lent a hand by swirling them around in the solution to make sure the dye spread evenly. I hung the napkins to dry on hangers and then gave them a wash in the washer on a cold setting. I'm thrilled with how the colors turned out!
